Several ways of how to level the ground on the site
Quite often, after acquiring a site, we notice that it does not differ on an even surface. Choose leveling rake. The presence of holes, shallow ditches, or slopes makes it impossible to build up or even basic exploitation the land. How to fix the situation? It should be determined how to level the ground on the site. In this article, we will look at several ways.
Before leveling the ground on the site, you need to clean it as much as possible of stumps, weeds, all kinds of debris, such as construction. These steps must be performed. Our goal is to clear the area as much as possible to make the landscape visible. It is also necessary to determine the slope angle of the site.
Use a bulldozer or not?
To level the surface, equipment is often used, including a bulldozer. But if you plan to organize a garden or at least a lawn, then its use is not recommended. The main reason is that a bulldozer can destroy the fertile layer of the earth, which will later have to be restored. Although in cases of dealing with large stumps, it will not be possible to do without equipment. In this case, it is better to use a small tractor in order to minimize the damage to the fertile layers of the earth. In general, it is up to you to decide whether or not to use a bulldozer by deciding what to do about how to level the ground on the site. After all, you can put a little more effort and complete the task according to all the rules.
Correct terrain alignment
If you refuse to use large equipment or the area of the site is too small for this, then you can level it yourself. Let’s consider the order of actions. Let’s move on to solving the question: “How to level the land on the site with your own hands?” To do this, you need a level, spirit level and pegs. If you want to make it perfect, start by peeling off the top layer of earth and setting it aside. Then divide the area into equal small squares, in the corners of which, drive in the pre-prepared pegs. Now let’s move on to determining the average height level. The easiest way is to take a peg in the middle of the site as a reference point. Then, using the level and spirit level, we set the height marks on each peg. To simplify the work, a rope is pulled between the stakes. It makes it easier to identify the places that need correction. This is the easiest way to level the ground on the site. Although, as you have already noticed, this option is very time-consuming.
Preparing a site for a lawn
If you are interested in how to level the ground on a plot for a lawn, then first decide on the complexity of the upcoming work. If the area has minor errors, then you can cope on your own. The first way is to use a cultivator. It is necessary with its help to plow the area several times in different directions. Then, using a rake, you need to manually level the ground. Remove the roots of weeds or small stones along the way. If you cannot manage the weeds manually, then before cultivation, the site can be treated with a special herbicide corresponding to the type of weed. After finishing work, you can safely sow grass, and in the summer you will have the coveted lawn.
Experts recommend preparing a site for a lawn in the fall. During this period, you need to walk a couple of times with a cultivator or tractor over the area. In this form, the land remains for the winter. In the spring, as soon as the soil thaws, it is necessary to cultivate the site, to clear it of weed residues. A roller can be used for leveling.
After the performed manipulations, we sow the grass. Let’s tell you a little secret. It is important for the first time not to walk on the sown area – until the roots of the grass get stronger. Don’t forget about watering. Especially in dry weather. Watering should be done early in the morning or evening, avoiding windy weather. Thus, you can level the ground in the area for the lawn.
Responsible approach to business
If you have a lot of free time or do not like quick solutions to a problem, then this information is for you. There is a longer way of how to level the ground on the site. First of all, carefully inspect the area and make sure there are no drainage problems. Perhaps the appearance of irregularities or depressions in the territory is associated with a leakage of a sewage system or a water supply system. In this case, you need to contact a specialist. If no such problems have arisen, move on to the next question. Do you want to have a perfectly level lawn or just want to change the slope of the site? Depending on the answer, there will be different options for solving problems.
Changing the slope most often requires the use of heavy equipment. But if you only need to fill in a few depressions, then your problem is much easier to solve. It is recommended to prepare a leveling mixture. To do this, you will need fertile soil, which can be purchased at a gardening store, sand and fertilizer. Fill holes and depressions with the prepared mixture and level the surface with a rake. It is better to trample the introduced soil so that it is compacted and water it. Then let the ground settle a little and after a few days, the area can be sown with grass. Remember to water your lawn often so that your work and time don’t go to waste.
One of the most time-consuming steps to build a decent lawn is to prepare a site for sowing a lawn.
It is important for the future lawn to level and tamp the ground on which it will be planted.
Leveling the site is a very responsible event, because the appearance of the lawn will depend on how carefully the soil is prepared.
A lawn planted on a level surface will look perfect. On an uneven area with bumps and holes, the lawn looks sloppy: after rain or watering, water stagnates in the holes, which leads to the lawn getting wet, exposing it to diseases, and bumps make it difficult for the lawn mower to work. Carefully leveling the pitch will help you create the perfect lawn.
Before starting leveling work, it is very important to decide what size your lawn will be and whether you can prepare a base for it without using special equipment, determine how uneven your area is and whether the soil is fertile. If the differences on the site are more than 5-8 cm and the soil is fertile, then it is more advisable to first move the upper fertile layer to the edge of the site and perform alignment on the lower soil layer. And then, when the site becomes sufficiently flat, return the fertile layer to its place. This will create favorable conditions for good growth of the root system of the new lawn.
The quality of the future lawn directly depends on the quality of soil leveling.
It is advisable to temporarily fold fertile soil at the edge of the site in an embankment no more than 30 cm high and preferably not longer than 4 weeks, otherwise aerobic microorganisms that live in the upper layers of the soil and make it fertile and biologically active may die in the absence of oxygen. The nutrition of the future lawn, its supply of moisture and oxygen, as well as how firmly the plants are held, depends on the condition of the soil.
If the layer of fertile soil on your plot for the lawn is very small, less than 15-22 cm, or the plot is very uneven, it will be rational to bring in fertile soil and mix it with old soil. Too heavy soil must be mixed with peat and sand: peat should not be more than 20%, otherwise you will get soil with high acidity, which lawns do not like.
To facilitate the flow of rainwater from the lawn area, it is necessary to provide a slope of 1-3%, for large lawns a larger slope is allowed, but not exceeding 30%.Back to the table of contents
Sequence of work in a small area
To level the soil of a small area for a lawn, you will need tools and devices such as a shovel and a pitchfork to move the soil, a rake to evenly distribute the soil over the surface of the site, wooden pegs, a long block (at least 2 m) and a building level to level the site under the lawn to perfect condition, a garden roller or board, with the help of which the soil is compacted.
A new lawn requires a rake and a bayonet shovel for even leveling.
Using a shovel, we level the site, cutting off the bumps and filling the holes. If the earth is very dense, then it is dug up. Next, you need to return the fertile soil layer to its place and level it with a rake. We take a break of 2 weeks so that the earth settles, and then level the surface with a bar, a building level and wooden pegs, which are marked 10 cm from the top. We set the pegs in squares at 9 points (3 in each row), level them with a bar and a building level installed on it and add or remove the earth until its surface is equal to the marks that are applied to the pegs.
Raking the site is carried out in order to level the soil. After it, it is necessary to compact the earth with a garden roller or with the help of a board and its own weight so that it does not sink very much after the first rains. Compaction of the soil should not be done after rain, it is better to do this in dry weather, do the work slowly and try not to miss even a few centimeters.
After high-quality compaction of the earth, it is necessary to remove stones and weed roots and level the mounds that have formed again. Once again, go over the surface of the site with a rake; the best for finishing leveling is a special lawn rake. They do an excellent job not only with leveling the soil, but also remove stones, weed roots, and they are also good for planting seeds in the soil. The quality of the alignment is checked by stretching out a long bar or stepladder. In case of detecting irregularities on the site, they again pass with a lawn rake.Back to the table of contents
Use of special equipment
Leveling a large area manually will take a lot of time and effort, therefore it is more advisable to use the services of special equipment that is used to carry out earthworks. You can use a tractor first: it will be necessary to plow 2 times, it is best to make 2 passes along and across the site. Then you should loosen the soil with a cultivator, preferably in different directions.
If it is advisable to remove the top fertile layer, then you can use a bulldozer or grader. First, the top layer is shifted, and then the soil is moved, cutting off the bumps and filling the pits, and thereby making the surface even. After that, the fertile soil is distributed over the leveled surface of the site and the soil is rolled in with a garden roller, removing all the so-called air pockets, due to which the soil may subsequently sink.
The technique is used for plowing, harrowing the soil and displacing the top layer of the earth. But you still can’t do without the use of manual labor. Further leveling and preparation of the ground for planting a lawn is carried out in the same way as in small areas, and using the same tools and devices.
After carrying out work to create a high-quality foundation for the future lawn and before sowing seeds, the soil must be kept under steam. Weed seeds left in the ground will germinate, and you can remove them in time. A lawn planted on an even and properly prepared base, with proper care, will be distinguished by its beauty and healthy appearance. Take the time and effort to prepare the lawn base carefully. Then your site will be decorated with the perfect green carpet.
